Founded in 1993, the Bulgarian Lawyers for Human Rights Foundation is a nonprofit organization of practicing lawyers, whose aim is to collaborate for the consolidation and effective implementation of international standards in the sphere of human rights protection in Bulgaria. For achieving its goals, the Foundation takes action in two main directions:specialized legal aid and pleading on strategically chosen legal cases before Bulgarian and International courts; and action through publications, informational and educational initiative.

  LEGAL AID

Providing free legal aid and pleading on strategically chosen legal cases, the Foundation strives towards the attainment of necessary changes in the Bulgarian legislation and practice. For this purpose, we choose and plead cases that reveal typical violations of human rights, as well as cases, where there is inconsistency between the Bulgarian legislation and the claimed international standards.

PUBLICATIONS, INFORMATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL ACTION FOR THE LEGAL COMMUNITY

Publication of articles, books, court rulings and other materials related to the standards for human rights protection, their interpretation and the practice of their implementation.

"CIVIL SOCIETY FOR SUSTAINABLE POLICY OF HUMAN RIGHTS PROTECTION IN BULGARIA" PROJECT

This is a three year project realized thanks to the financial support provided by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the MATRA Programme. Within the framework of the project international experts on human rights will examine and assess the compliance of Bulgarian legislation and practice with European standards for human rights. Their opinions and recommendations will be provided to the Bulgarian legislative, judicial and executive powers.
