Lawyers for Human Rights Foundation is a non-profit organization aiming
at the establishment and effective implementation of international standards
in the sphere of legal protection of human rights in Bulgaria. Founded
in 1993 by five lawyers from different legal-practice backgrounds, the
Bulgarian Lawyers for Human Rights Foundation is the first organization
of its sort in Bulgaria and in Central and Eastern Europe. Today, eleven
years later, the Foundation works with more than 25 prominent lawyers.
The Foundation addresses issues regarding the protection of human rights
in all fundamental spheres of the Bulgarian legislation.
For achieving its goals, the Foundation takes action in two main directions:

Legal aid and strategic
legal pursuit before Bulgarian and International courts on cases
related to: characteristic, repetitive violations of human rights;
Bulgarian legislative and judicial practice inconsistent with international
standards. |

Publications and
other informative and educative activities for the broad public
and for the legal community. This activity covers the sphere of
international acts and standards and their implementation in the
sphere of legal protection of human rights. |
Structure of the Organization.
Council of Directors
The council consists of five member, headed by a Chairman. It includes
lawyers working for the organization, as well as prominent, independent
specialists from other nongovernmental organizations. The council makes
strategic decisions regarding the policies and activities of the Foundation;
it approves the annual activity programmes and the budget; it verifies
the Annual Reports of the Foundation; controls the execution of the
programmes.
Executive Office
The Executive Office consists of three members, headed by the Executive
Director. The body decides principle questions related to the execution
of the projects of the Foundation. The Office manages the assets of
the Fondation and prepares Annual Reports about the work of the Foundation
for the Council of Directors.
The Chairman and the Executive Director lead and organize the work of
the Council of Directors and the Executive Office. They make decisions
about the management and the expensesof the organization. They represent
the Foundation in the country and abroad.
